The Vascular System of Canine and Feline Skin, 2023

Square

Canine (and feline) skin circulation is a network of blood vessels that starts with arteries branching into smaller arterioles and then into capillaries. Capillaries exchange oxygen, nutrients, and waste products with skin tissues, and the process continues as venules merge into veins, carrying deoxygenated blood away for reoxygenation. This intricate division of vessels supports skin health, temperature regulation, and waste removal in dogs and cats.

Understanding canine (feline) skin circulation is crucial for veterinarians because it enables them to assess and diagnose various skin conditions and diseases accurately. A comprehensive knowledge of the skin’s vascular system helps veterinarians identify issues related to blood flow, such as poor circulation, inflammation, or compromised healing processes. This understanding allows vets to make informed decisions about treatments, surgeries, wound care, and overall patient management, ensuring the optimal health and well-being of their canine and feline patients.

After conducting extensive research and seeking guidance from a veterinary professional, I created an informative diagram showcasing a simple visual explanation of the structure of canine/feline integument circulation. It is a good starting point for further studying of the various complicated structures existing in each of the represented skin layers.
